Best Buy Gift Card Doubles as Speaker

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 11:21 AM PST

We at Coolest Gadgets have already covered how Target has somehow turned their $50-1000 gift cards into a 1.2 megapixel camera. It appears that Best Buy has gotten in on this gift card doubling as another device action with a gift card that doubles as a speaker.

That’s right, if a Best Buy customer wants to pick up a gift card that is $50 or higher, he or she has the option of having one that serves as a miniature speaker. It comes with a 3.5mm jack that can connect to an iPod or other audio gadget, and will produce some excellent external sound.

I’m not certain how thick this Best Buy card is, but I can’t imagine it being as thin as a normal credit card. In other words, do you really want to put this in your wallet?

Anyway, you should be able to get the Best Buy Gift Certificate speaker now, and even have it shipped to you with free shipping.

Okay, I suppose that’s all I have to say about that. I would like to open up the comment section up to other ideas for gift certificates. For example, what about a McDonalds gift certificate that doubles as a Zune?

Keian Digital Photo Frame comes with built-in printer and audio player

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 10:43 AM PST

Sometimes the concept of a digital photo frame becomes quite vague as they start to have more and more applications become attached to them. Take the Keian Japan P71-A2-JP, a box-like photo frame that can act as a printer, audio player, and even the option of adding an external hard drive.

The printer function is quite interesting. Imagine having a friend over, and he or she looks at your 7-inch screen with a 480 x 234 display. If your guest wants to take one of the photos with him or her, all that is required is to hit a button, and he or she will receive a 100 x 150 mm size photo with 300dpi resolution.

So, it’s a photo frame that prints photos! What will they think of next? MP3 file support, for one, but that has been done on other digital photo frames. One thing that I haven’t seen on other digital photo frames is the option to add on an external hard drive.

I mean, usually I see just a SDHC card reader, or an option to take photos off of a memory stick. Actually, the Keian Japan P71-A2-AP has that feature as well.

So, is this the beginning of a new age of digital photo frames that can do more than just view photos? Maybe they should just make all digital photo frames into computers, but that seems to be happening already.

Lutron lets you dim your lights from your iPhone or IPod Touch

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 10:06 AM PST

I have to admit, when I first heard the word “Lutron”, I thought it was referring to a Robot who could separate into other robots or vehicles. Oh wait, that’s Voltron! Lutron is a lighting company that has been around since the 60’s, and they developed the dimmer switch around that time.

Lutron has updated their services by offering a lighting system that is controlled by an iPhone or even an iPod Touch. It works by simply screwing wireless modules into the lamps themselves, and then you can take control.

By control, I mean that you can dim or brighten your lights from across the room by a mobile device. You can even use the application to split up the rooms of your house so you don’t lose track of what lights are shinning.

This device is somewhat similar to the zControl from Actiontec, except you can only control the lights, not the other electrical appliances. However, that particular device will cost a little more than the free application for the iPhone.

Yes, that’s right, the app is free, but it is not available now. You should be able to get it in January. I highly suggest that Lutron have this application on display at CES 2009. Trust me Lutron, guaranteed sales.

The Loop Memory Drive

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 10:00 AM PST

Typically I am not a fan of the wearable USB drives, they usually feature overly shiny and obnoxious designs. However, this new USB drive is plenty sleek and features nice clean lines. No, it will never be deemed high fashion, however, it doesn’t look gaudy or cheap either. Plus your USB drive being on a necklace means that you’re less likely to lose it. Which is always a bonus when you use it on regular basis.

They come in either orange or white, so if you are a major fan of brightly colored items you’re in luck with this flash drive. The chunky ring would make it easy to hold onto to insert or remove it from your computer. It would also make it an odd enough shape that if it were in the bottom of your purse you could easily feel it out from the rest of the items. They come with 2GB of storage for $59. Which seems a bit steep for 2GB, but it wouldn’t be a convenient drive to own.

Tadpole Wrapz with Headphones

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 08:00 AM PST

Over time I’ve begun to somewhat accept that some gadgets are helpful to keep the kids entertained. Just as long as you don’t use them as a babysitter all the time. Well if you have allowed your preschooler or even elementary school age child to have an iPod you’re going to need a way to protect it. After all, young kids aren’t going to always be the most careful and even if they are, they’re still not a graceful bunch. At some point they’re going to trip and fall, probably with the iPod in hand. Well Tadpole is releasing a case that will make the iPod less likely to break when it’s dropped.

They also have a pair of matching headphones that look very kid friendly. The only down side with this durable little case is that it doesn’t have a slot at the bottom. Which means you have to take the case off in order to recharge the iPod. Other than that it looks like it will hold up to any beatings your little ones might dish out. To pick the set up it will cost you $14.99. They will fit either the iPod Classic or the iPod Video.

Logitech diNovo keyboard now for Macs

Posted: 12 Nov 2008 04:30 AM PST

No, Logitech has not forgotten about all you Mac users out there, although they are rather late when it comes to introducing the diNovo keyboard for the Mac. This product is essentially the same as the standard PC version, although you will find Mac-centric features such as special F-keys that offer one-touch access to Mail, Safari, iTunes, Exposé, Cover Flow, Dashboard, QuickLook and Spaces. It is also good to note that the Mac version features Logitech’s PerfectStroke key system that helps make your overall typing experience more comfortable. It will communicate with your Mac via 2.4GHz wireless technology and comes with an impressive 3-year battery life - the longest of all from Logitech so far. The Logitech diNovo Keyboard, Mac Edition cordless keyboard will hit the US and Europe this month for $99.99.

New Enterprise pic finally hits the Net …

Posted: 11 Nov 2008 10:48 PM PST

It is perhaps the coolest gadget in the universe after the lightsaber. It’s the Starship Enterprise. And the new reboot of the popular Paramount science fiction series is getting its flagship ride “pimped” for JJ Abrams vision of what Starfleet looks like. The new Enterprise looks a lot like the old from both the series and the movies, and Abrams says he did it that way deliberately.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Abrams plan was to Abrams create a new Enterprise design by fusing original TV series Enterprise and the movie franchise Enterprise. The result is a super cool starship that looks like it stopped by the Federation speed shop on the way to the Neutral Zone.
“If you’re going to do Star Trek there are many things you cannot change,” said Abrams. “The Enterprise is a visual touchstone for so many people. So if you’re going to do the Enterprise, it better look like the Enterprise, because otherwise, what are you doing?”

The result is a ship built for speed that is as deadly as it is sleek. And it better be. Star Trek fans are the most demanding in the world and so the wisdom of keeping the design of Kirk’s starship is as smart as it is realistic. And with today’s visual effects so sophisticated, you can bet that the photon torpedos and phasers that come out of that puppy are going to be awesome.

Star Trek warps to theaters May 8, 2009.
